Homemade Treats

Is your pet on a special diet recommended by your vet or a finicky eater? Try making treats at home! Its an easy way to show your pet affection without “cheating” and can be cost effective too.

If you are using a canned product, cut up some bite sized pieces and bake in your microwave for approximately 2 1/2 minutes. If you are using a conventional oven, bake at 350 degrees for approximately 30 minutes or until desired texture. This will change the texture but not damage the nutrients, and is an excellent treat for your pet while still feeding the necessary diet. Be sure to refrigerate the treats made from canned product since there are no preservatives added.

If you are feeding the dry form, grind the kibble into flour using a blender, and mix with enough water to form a dough. Shape into a “cookie” and bake on a cookie sheet in the oven for approximately 30 minutes at 350 degrees, until crispy. As you know, it is very important to stay strictly on a prescribed diet, and this will allow your pet to feel special and spoiled.

These homemade treats should not exceed 5% of your pets total daily intake. Be sure to decrease meal amounts to compensate for “treat” extra.
